Late to School Policy

2018/2019 School Year: For discipline purposes tracking begins September 17, 2018.

Unexcused Late to School (Home Access Code = AUL)

“Students should recognize that a written explanation from home does not automatically cause the late to be “excused.” Such reasons as car trouble, personal business, heavy traffic, need at home, etc., while understandable, are not acceptable excuses and will be listed as unexcused.”  (Chapter 3, RCCSD Code of Conduct)

If a student is not in his/her first class of the day by 7:25am he/she is considered late to school. Late students should sign in at the “Late Center” located in the theatre ticket booth in the lobby. Students who arrive after 7:55am will sign in at the main office.

All medical appointments (doctor, dentist, etc.) require a note on office letterhead from the medical office.

Unexcused tardies to school are cumulative for the year as it relates to school choice and the student’s permanent attendance record.

For students who reach 10 or more unexcused tardies to school, the school administration reserves the right to choose from a variety of disciplinary measures as it deems appropriate. For example, forfeiture of parking permit for a period of time, exclusion from after-school activities for a period of time, dances, homecoming events, etc.

AUL reports will be run on a monthly basis. Students who have 3 or more unexcused tardies a month will receive a detention.  Detention will be served the following month. For example 3+ tardies in October student would serve detention the first week of November, etc.

Unexcused tardies are cumulative for the year as it relates to a student’s permanent attendance record and Choice.

District choice policy states: “A student is eligible for choice termination if she/he has at least 10 days unexcused absent. A student is also eligible for choice termination if she/he has 25 days absences or 25 days tardy, excused or unexcused. A visiting teacher referral must be initiated when a student reaches ten days unexcused absence.”

It is the responsibility of the parent to monitor tardies to school via HAC (Home Access Center).

Early Dismissal

Any student leaving school before the close of the school day must have a written note stating the reason, time of dismissal and expected time of return, if applicable. Notes must be signed by a parent or guardian with a working telephone number where the parent/guardian can be reached. If an email is sent it must include a working telephone number where the parent/guardian can be reached.  The main office will call to verify each Early Dismissal request. No early dismissals will be permitted after 2pm.

NOTE: Early Dismissals will not be granted without verbal confirmation from the parent/guardian.

At the appropriate time, the student will report to the main office to be signed out by the parent/guardian. Student drivers must sign out in the main office before leaving the building for an ED. Students returning to school must be signed in by the parent/guardian in the main office. For the safety of our students, please be prepared to show a photo I.D. when taking your child out of school during the school day.

Unexcused Tardy to Class (beginning with the 2nd class of the day)

Unexcused tardies to class are not cumulative. A detention will be issued for every three (3) unexcused tardies from the reporting teacher/s. In other words, two (2) unexcused tardies from Teacher A + one (1) unexcused tardy from Teacher B does not result in a detention.

Class Cut/Skipping Class

All class cuts will be documented in RAP.

First infraction – Detention assigned. Parent contacted. No credit for work due or missed.

Second infraction – Detention assigned. Parent contacted. No credit for work due or missed.

Subsequent infractions – In School Suspension may be issued. Parent contacted. No credit for work due or missed. Conference may be required w/ parent, student and administration. Student may be placed on a contract which will outline consequences for future infractions.

Disruption of the Educational Process

Removal from class//student counseled//return to class if possible. Teacher contact parent. Detention if warranted. Student may be suspended in-school or out of school depending on nature of disruption.

All referrals entered into RAP via DSC.
